I am so so sorry. I know how much you were all looking forward to meeting him. I know it's a crushing disappointment but I hope you'll find some small comfort in knowing that you are all going to get to be together and have fun and do the town. I know it won't be the same without Nick but I know you all will rally and have a great time together anyway. :( Damn.

Well, in this case I'd say it wasn't the promoters because it was officially announced at nicklea.com and we all know that Nick's agent is in contact with the webmistress there. So it was genuine. But his cancellation is already the second one for the con, so that the only two people/events that I was interested in are both not going to be there/happen, which means I'm not in the least interested in anything going on there. I'm going to enjoy LA and the gals and try not to think too much of what we could've done with Nick. I'll daydream instead of what I'll do to him once he's handcuffed on my balcony...*fumes*

That really IS too bad. Who was the other person you were hoping to see?

I once went to Toronto to a SciFi/Fantasy Con because Anne McCaffrey was to be there, It wasn't until I GOT to the Con that I found out her doctor had told her she shouldn't make the flight! I was so very, very disappointed, especially because I knew I'd never get another chance to meet her.

Such is life.

And yes! It's a good thing we still have our daydreams! Dreams of Nick can keep us going MANY a time. =>}

I don't really get the whole "subject to professional obligations" thing anyway. Isn't this a professional obligation? When people spend money on tickets with the expectation that a certain person is going to be participating, what makes this less important than any other commitment?

I'm not bashing Nick, here, honestly. I just don't understand why cons operate this way. And I feel so badly for all of my friends who are so disappointed now that he won't be there. I guess all we can hope is that he's making a new movie with lots of slash potential.

Well, basically, look at it this way. You're unemployed as an actor most of the time. Should a job drop in your lap, you're gonna take it. It'll pay the rent. If you go to a convention, you get some money for it, but definitely not a whole lot. So, what are you going to do? Take the well paid job or "waste time" at a party? I'd grab the job, personally.

It's a standard clause in a lot of contracts, and yes, even though he had an obligation to us as well, and he did make a commitment, it's still understandable that he would choose whatever job it is that he's now doing instead. We all knew this could happen. I was just hoping that a week before the con, he'd have his affairs settled and so wouldn't possibly bail out at the last second. You know? That's what crushes me more than anything, that it's on such a short notice.

Of course, should I find out he was busy painting his new home on his little island instead of having a real, paying acting job the next weekend, I'm gonna kill him. Slowly and painfully. *grumble*

I am so, so sorry for you and the rest of the gang, Gaby :-(. I hope there will be another chance one day and that I can be part of it then.

Yes, that's where he lives, I know someone who is in the know about that. They docked their boats together when he lived in Kitsilano and he told them.

Friends of my friends live on Vancouver Island and have repeatedly invited me to visit them so I might just take them up on their offer. They live close to Nanaimo. All I need to do is jump on the ferry there and... *insert very slow evil smirk*

I would LOVE to visit Vancouver. I'm just enthralled by it. It seems like a very special place. And what a cool, eclectic, beautiful city to grow up in! I hope when you go back someday you let me tag along! ;)
